destination wedding photography FAQ’s
What is a destination photographer?
A destination photographer, or “travel photographer” is a professional photographer that travels to a location of your choosing to photograph a wedding, elopement, or portrait session. Usually this implies that the photographer will travel by plane to this location and require lodging and transportation.
How much should a travel photographer charge for a destination wedding?
Photographers will charge their normal rates for photographing your wedding, plus additional expenses incurred by traveling to get to your wedding destination. These expenses include airfare to and from your destination, baggage fees for both personal items and photography equipment, special permits and licenses (National Parks charge for professional photo shoots), rental cars or other means of transportation for the day before, during, and after your event, and sometimes a per diem amount per day that they are traveling to cover food costs.
Why can’t I just hire someone that is local to my destination?
Typically hiring photographers from your wedding location is not only more expensive but riskier in terms of receiving your images. It is not only harder to coordinate with them about the details of your wedding day because of timezones, but also if you were to have any questions about your images, you may having to deal with a prolonged and inconvenient correspondence. For peace of mind, its better to bring someone with you that you know and trust that will make you and your images priority.
Take it from our couples: “Having the same photographer for our engagement session AND our wedding was a big deal for us. We wanted someone we could build and maintain a relationship with and someone who could get to know us through the engagement session in preparation for the wedding day. Our stress level was greatly reduced after meeting in person. I can't imagine flying to a new location and meeting a new photographer on-site without having met in person.”
Do I need to book the flights?
It’s preferred that you allow me to book my own flights so that I can be cognizant of departure times, layovers, etc. I will approve the cost with you before purchasing flights, and then invoice you for reimbursement. If you have a preference on airline I will try to accommodate. For domestic flights I typically choose Southwest as a cost-effective option.
